Train Track metal to metal contact?
Why do train tracks not seem to be worn down after years of use, I mean wouldn’t you think the metal to metal contact would be very bad on both the wheels and track…how’s it all work?
The rail does wear out.Especially on the inside edge.Curves wear faster on the outside edge than straight track does and require replacement more often.They also grind the rail to restore the correct profile.When the gauge gets too wide then they have to replace it with new rail.One thing that helps rail wear longer is the fact that the rails are canted in towards each other.And the train wheels are shaped so that the flange doesn’t contact the rail all the time.The rail being canted also helps it resist flopping over from the tremendous forces being applied to it.http://www.psrm.org/faqs/gauge/track-lg.gif
